Chapter 15

“No,” Anya said right away, raising a hand and taking a small step backward. “No.”

“Yes,” Taylor retorted with a conviction so solid that Mona knew instantly she’d been in on this plan before Juliet brought it up. She thought back to all the secret little chats they’d been having over the past few days. This was what those chats had been about.

“Where are we going to get access to a dead body?” Mona asked, hushing her tone even though Rose was asleep. It felt so wrong to be discussing this in just the next room over, with only a bathroom separating them. “It’s not like we can go grave robbing, the meat won’t be fresh. And I’m guessing that even fresh meat from the morgue is too pumped with chemicals. How do we know it wouldn’t poison Rose?”

Juliet stared at Mona, expressionless. “We’ll...obviously...need to get fresh meat.”

Anya let out a short burst of borderline hysterical laughter. “Yeah, okay, we’ll just hit up the butcher, or hey, maybe we can just head downtown and pluck someone from the street and murder them!”

Taylor cleared her throat and looked down. Juliet brought her fingertips to her temples, rubbed them in small circles. “Don’t make me lay this all out for you,” she said quietly, deadly, like when she told Taylor to open the trash bag with the body in it. Her eyes shifted back and forth between them, her stare electrifying. “If you two fail me now, if you fail Rose now, I don’t think I’ll have it in me to forgive you, ever. It’s important that we work together on this.”

The vague but deliberate threat hung heavy in the air.

“Work together how?” Mona asked meekly, again knowing the answer but refusing to accept it. “Do you really think we’re capable of killing someone? It’s impossible. There’s no way.”

“I want you to think about what you’re saying, Mona,” Juliet snapped then, lifting her gaze to glare into Mona’s. “Mom was able to do it, for Rose. You’re not able to handle something that even Mom could manage?”

It hurt, but Mona knew what Juliet was doing. She wouldn’t let herself be tricked using her own feelings against her.

“You can’t be serious,” Anya whispered, all hints of her outburst gone and replaced by terror. “That is impossible.”

“It’s not,” Juliet said. “But I’m not surprised that you two are the ones having such a hard time accepting reality. Taylor knows what I’m talking about. She knows it’s what’s best for Rose, and for everybody. Do I really need to remind you of how she started acting when she went without food for too long?”

Mona couldn’t deny that part. She just couldn’t believe they were in this position right now. She hated Mom, hated her, for doing this to all of them, for doing this to Rose. It was all so messed up and wrong, beyond comprehension, but here they were in Juliet and Taylor’s bedroom talking about murdering someone.

“We’ll get caught,” Mona tried. “No matter what we do, we are totally screwed.
